The Knott, Rest Dodd & Angle Tarn

Distance: 15.05km
Ascent: 813m

A good day out on the fells that visits a few Wainwrights. The route gives options for Little Legs, with scope to add more peaks or to just enjoy the ridge path.
Starting from the campsite is always nice in the morning and this route takes in the Patterdale Valley, curving round to Hayeswater. Here you climb quite steeply and suddenly you are on the tops, surrounded by mountains. Now you can choose how long to make your day. We went to The Knott first and then returned down the ridge to Rest Dodd and Angle Tarn before dropping back to the campsite.

Route:

From the campsite, head South back towards

Side Farm  (where you pay for your stay). From

Patterdale, take the large farm track between

two buildings to cut across the valley bottom to

Side Farm.

From Side farm, follow the Footpath South

towards Hartsop and Brother's Water. After the farm at Beckstones, the path climbs slightly to meet a Bridleway (be careful of mountain bikers here).

At a stream crossing, you will see a footbridge above you on the valley side and you leave the track on a smaller footpath to climb up to this and to follow the path around and then down into Hartsop.

In Hartsop, turn left on the road and go through the small carpark. A track leads up Hayeswater Gill and a short steep climb bring you to Hayeswater. Cross the footbridge and then follow the track more or less straight up the hillside. A footpath more or less follows the wall rather than as marked for the Bridleway on the OS map. As the terrain flattens out, you reach a footpath that runs along the ridge.

Turn right here (South / South East) and follow the path around The Knott to a small saddle. Turn right here (West) along the wall and it is a short climb to the summit of The Knott.

From the summit of The Knott follow the wall North, dropping back to the path from earlier. Optional short cut - turn left here and follow the path back to Angle Tarn. We went more cross country here, following the wall across the path, dropping down but always staying close to the wall. At the wall corner, continue North away from the wall for the short climb up to Rest Dodd, another Wainwright.

From Rest Dodd matters continue cross country! However, there is a path marked on the OS map and it is there on the ground. Leave the summit heading North West and before you reach a wall, turn left (West) to follow the small path back to the main Angle Tarn path.

At the main path, turn right (North West) and follow the obvious, large path to Angle Tarn and beyond to Boredale Hause. This is a large saddle with paths heading off in all directions. The path you are on tends to lead naturally towards the descent but make sure you head down the Glenridding (West) side here! The path descends across the hillside to bring you out on the track near Side Farm.

Verdict

This was a great day on the Fells with the Little Chaps. It sounds like a lot of ascent but the most of this is climbed as you approach and pass Hayeswater. Once on the top here, the summits you visit are optional and you have many choices. The Little Chaps decided to add to their Wainwrights ticklist, although we opted out of the Angletarn Pikes. The walking along to Angletarn is easy, on a good path and no navigation is really required if you choose the simple option. Our route goes a little more cross country!

A "proper", but accessible, Fell day...
